I... guess? Aren't American burgers really big though?
[he's only seen it on TV...]
That's a good question though...
[he lets his head rest back down on the ground as he thinks about it, a ghost of a frown drifting across his lips. Every day on the island had been sunny, and more often than not, terrible things happened under the summer sun. But hurricanes had swept through the base only a few weeks ago, and that had been pretty terrible in its own right.]
I guess... I'd rather be inside during a rainy day and outside during a sunny day? A nice mix of both instead of one or the other.
[How plain.]
Um... would you rather stay up late or wake up early?
[ she nods at his answer though, not adding her own commentary to it. a mix is nice. ]
I'd like to wake up early and greet the sun! The sky is really pretty when it rises, like a great big canvas. Although stars are gorgeous too. Oh, this is hard...
[He laughs, picking his head up again so he can watch her think and keeping his arms wrapped comfortably around her. Maybe he should... no, that would be too corny. He can't ask her if she wants to watch a sunrise with him, no way.]
I don't usually wake up in time for sunrise, but... I bet it looks amazing over the ocean.
[How does she do things like that so easily?! Teach him your ways, cute Hajime.]
Yeah, I'll do that. That sounds like fun.
[He relaxes back down again, closing his eyes with a quiet, contented sigh. Making plans like this is just a weird kind of comfort for him, a reassurance that they'll both be here to do these kinds of things.]
I guess if you stay up late enough, you can watch the stars and the sunrise, huh?
[ one day you, too, will not overthink everything. probably. ]
It's a very quiet moment here. I did it back home, but I lived in the city so you'd always hear the hum of everything going on, even late at night. But here it's all hush hush.
[ hajime places a hand over her lips, and then keeps talking. ] I like both. Tachikawa is so alive but so is this planet, but in different ways! And you can see the stars so clearly here, and there's this nice rush you get watching them melt into golds and blues.
[He hums, listening to her speak and trying to picture what the sunrise over his own hometown looked like. It feels like it's been so long since he's seen anything like that; Jabberwock Island had been almost as foreign a setting to him as this planet.
His grip around her tightens, just a hair, as he tries to fight back another wave of homesickness. He misses the bustle of cities sometimes, the simple things like walking to a convenience store, or studying at the library. Even just riding the train.]
Do you miss it...? [he asks quietly, opening his eyes to glance at her again.] Tachikawa?
[ hajime lets her hand drop from her lips, and she rests her head against hinata's chest. ]
I miss everyone there. And I really need to make sure Katze-san isn't causing any trouble. I thought they came here with me at first, but there's no way they'd be able to stay hidden for this long.
[ just little hajime things: completely forgets she has never actually explained who the heck katze is to him. ]
[When she rests her head on his chest, he sighs quietly and wavers for a moment, thinking about trying to bring one hand up to stroke through her hair. But... maybe later. He doesn't have enough courage to try something like that right now, afraid of ruining the moment.
Which could be ruined at any second by the Countess or Souda, lbr, but still.]
"Katze-san"? [he repeats, blinking once. He doesn't remember hearing about something named that before!]
[ it's a miracle she left them alone for this long? it's only a matter of time before she comes back for the ahoge. it's just sitting there, an easy target.
but oh... now that she thinks about it, she only really told korosensei about berg katze? she mentioned them, sort of, to both dirk and URSULA but. hm. ]
Katze-san is an alien who's a little naughty, so I was keeping a close eye on them. But when I came here I somehow showed up alone!
[He doesn't know why he's surprised by any of this nonsense anymore. It's not like he can forget that Hajime can turn into some kind of power ranger, even if he only saw it once.]
I mean... I guess that makes sense. I was with all my classmates before I came here, but for a long time, it was just me until the others showed up.
Oh no, this is different than that. They should definitely be here with me, even right now.
[ she taps hinata's chest, once, twice, three times. ]
I just don't understand how they could have gotten away from me without me noticing? Because normally it's a strong tingling feeling, but it's the bad kind of tingling, and I didn't get that! It's soooo frustrating.
[He blinks at the taps to his chest, confused for a couple seconds before his expression falters from surprise into something a little closer to a sympathetic horror.]
You mean... the alien was inside you? How does that happen?!
[That... sounds like the plot of an American horror movie. Or hentai.]
[ she lifts her head up, shifting slightly so she can pull it out of her pocket. hajime sets the book next to them on the floor. ]
This got pulled out of here. [ hajime taps hinata's chest again. ] It was that bad tingling feeling. So I figured that if they can get pulled out, you can push one back in. So I took Katze-san's note from them and put it inside me.
[If her soul is a literal notebook, he supposes that makes a little bit of sense-- No! It definitely doesn't!! In what kind of world are notebooks just pulled out and shoved into people's chests?!]
Is that really okay...? [All he knows about souls is what Dirk told him about his own. And if that's really what her NOTE is, then... that definitely belongs inside her!! And just swapping souls around doesn't... seem like it should be a thing that's done??]
Mmhm, it's what makes me a Gatchaman. And my NOTE is so cute, isn't it? I'd miss it if it were gone.
[ these are her priorities. ]
And it was the only way to take care of Katze-san. We couldn't beat them, even after everyone worked so hard! It'll be really bad to let all that effort go to waste and it'll be worse if they kept doing bad things, so I had to make sure they went somewhere safe.
[He glances toward her NOTE again, really wondering if it's really a good idea to just... leave it laying around like that. If that's true, that's it's part of her, then... just losing it would be a bigger issue than whether or not it was cute!]
I mean for you. I can't imagine...
[That it was safe? That something like that is even possible? What kind of weirdass alternate Japan Hajime comes from that this is even a thing??]
[ if anything happened to it she'd like. die. but it's no big deal?? and it being cute is obviously the most important part of it. she beadazzled it once (and got yelled at for doing it). ]
It's okay! I take very good care of mine, nothing will happen to it.
[ she won't comment on whether or not shoving katze's into her was safe though. because it definitely was not, and she actually had no idea on whether or not that would work. hajime wasn't even completely confident that they wouldn't have just taken over her body after the fusion happened? but it worked out. everything is Fine. ]
[No, now he's worried about her. He tilts his head, meeting her eyes with a frown.]
Really. If Katze-san isn't... if they're not here, shouldn't you... put that back?
[he shifts as if he might tap her chest, then pauses, thinks better of it for obvious differences between her chest and his, and just lets his hand drop back down between her shoulder blades.]
I can't do that. [ she frowns, her voice losing that slightly whimsical tone that usually accompanies her words. ]
I can't take it back out on my own. And what if something happens, and I could have saved someone if I had my powers? That wouldn't be very Gatcha of me, Hajime-kun.
[Her use of his first name instead of the dumb nickname makes him pause, looking up to meet her eyes. Then he sighs quietly, glancing toward her notebook again. It sounds absurd. Totally crazy. But he'd seen what she'd been able to do with her NOTE, and... he knows he could never do anything like that.]
You're... a really admirable person. I wish I could be as strong as you are. I just... don't want to see anything happen to you. That's all.
[ although even if she wasn't okay she probably wouldn't say anything? as much as she likes to listen to other people talk about their feelings, hajime never actually talks about her own. whoops. ]
I didn't tell you this to worry you though! It's something important about my life, and since we're friends I just figure you might want to know.

[ it sounds cool to her, anyway. ]
Do you prefer sunny days or rainy days?

Oh, I put them there! I shoved their NOTE inside me so their soul lived inside me.
[ this is probably a good time to mention that the tiny notebook she carries around that lets her transform is actually her soul? that isa thing. ]
no subject
W-what?!
[Wait, hang on. Hang on.]
The NOTE... that's your notebook, right? How did you... what? Why?
