Name:
Hajime Hinata

Age: 17

Canon: Danganronpa

Canon point: end of DR2 chapter 6

History: Hajime Hinata, Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

Personality:
Hajime Hinata undergoes substantial character development throughout the course of the game. He starts as a person who admires talent in others, wanting to attain that kind of status more than anything. To feel like a member of society and someone he could be proud of, he was willing to give up his entire identity in pursuit of talent. By end of game, though his core personality remains the same, he’s become a much more confident person, happy with himself as he is and determined to stay that way.

Hajime is introduced as someone who admires Hope’s Peak Academy, one of the most prestigious schools in Japan, not because of its academics, but because it guarantees success for its graduates. As someone lacking confidence and feeling isolated from society, he felt that by graduating that school, he would be able to call himself someone special, someone talented. He was so preoccupied by talent because of how “painfully ordinary” he really is. When it comes down to it, Hajime is an average teenager, with no particularly interesting hobbies or skills. He certainly doesn’t stand out in a crowd appearance-wise, at once point told by one of his classmates that he’s easy to talk to because of “that harmless looking face of yours.”

In spite of being completely ordinary and not possessed of any special talents, Super High School Level or otherwise, Hajime becomes a leader among his classmates, guiding class trials and keeping everyone on task and focused. He’s strongly determined to survive along with his classmates, the first people he’s managed to form strong bonds with. Even at the end of game, when it seems like the only options that remain are hopeless ones, he chooses to live and create a new future with everyone else.

Even though he does want to create a new future, without being bound to the ideas of “success” or “talent,” he’s still a pragmatist. He freely admits that it will be difficult, and that it may not go as planned, or may not work at all. Throughout the game, he’s been the most realistic of them all, almost to the point of cynicism. He was one of the last of his classmates to accept their situation on the island as truth, and one of the first to question what was going on. This has remained throughout the game, to his benefit during the class trials. At one point, upon being accused of being suspicious of everyone during a class trial, he argues that it’s not because he doesn’t like them, but because he wants to believe in them. And because he wants to believe in them, he has to find the truth.

One of the things Hajime struggles with the most is being the one to make a decision alone. When confronted with two seemingly impossible choices, he freezes up, unable to pick either one without guidance from another one of his classmates. While he has become more confident in spite of his lack of talent, it’s easy for him to lapse back into being nervous or uncertain of himself, especially in the presence of people he admires.

When it comes to his classmates and friends, Hajime can be a bit of a pushover, being easily roped into situations against his better judgement. Anything from unwillingly crashing a girls-only beach party at the insistence of one of his male classmates, to going along with whatever activity someone proposes even after what might be initial reluctance, more often than not, he’ll wind up tagging along. This good-naturedness goes even deeper to an unwillingness to hurt anyone. Whether it's trying to avoid hurting Saionji's feelings about the diabolical-looking memorial she creates for Koizumi, or announcing that in a situation where he would either literally starve to death or kill a classmate to survive, he'd rather they all starve than hurt each other, Hajime tends to be non-combative.

More than anything, he’s a good-natured person. Even though his skeptical nature prevents him from accepting anything strictly at face-value, he tries to see the best in everyone, willing to work with them and doing his best to become friends with all of them. His most sarcastic comments (of which he has many) he tends to keep to himself, rather than express them to the classmate in question.

Perhaps the thing that has become the most important to him is his own identity. During his time at Hope’s Peak, when he was completely willing to abandon everything in pursuit of talent, researchers at the school conducted brutal experiments and performed brain surgery on him, turning him from Hajime Hinata into a person whose only desire was talent itself, with no other personality or motivation. During that time, he was given the name Izuru Kamukura, and any memory that he had once been Hajime Hinata was deeply buried. When Hajime learns this at the end of game, he’s disgusted and terrified; if he leaves the game, he might become that person again, which he desperately doesn’t want to do. He wants to continue his life as Hajime Hinata, and nearly risks everything their whole class has worked for in an attempt to stay that way. Creating the future for himself, and finding out who he is and what he can become on his own will be one of his primary motivations in Lagunbiru itself.

Abilities and Nerfs: None! Being totally normal is kind of his thing.

Inventory: just the clothes on his back!

Five Desires:

1) Date vouchers! Something he could use to go on a nice date with one or more people to either a fancy restaurant or a shopping trip, or an invite to a special event.

2) Money! Some kind of bonus to his stipend that he could use to improve living space or buy some nice things.

3) School memories. Not exactly a canon update, but regaining the memories that were repressed by his transformation into Izuru Kamukura. None of Kamukura's talents or any of his memories of his time AS Kamukura, since that'd be more like a canon update, but just the memories up to that point.

4) Panties… preferably those belonging to his close CR…

5) Personal VR room. While they're available for rent or purchase, maybe something he can have at home for personal use! Somehow that's less embarrassing than going out to use one in public.
