Night Four
[Matt. Matt. Matt. MATT!!
Hinata's not yelling for him because he's not quite that stupid, but he is making a serious effort to find the lawyer tonight. There wasn't much time to talk to him during the trial, but a protag's gotta protag. Even to a guy who's twice his age and the same height.
Presumably he'll find him AS LONG AS HE HASN'T GOTTEN HIMSELF KILLED.]
Matt.
[There's audible relief in Hinata's voice once he does come across him.]
I'm glad I found you.

I'm glad I found you.

[Matt's sat down next to a tree in contemplation, and almost seems to be meditating, with how still he is. He's definitely got his shit better now then he had initially.]
Hello, Hinata. How are you holding up?
[if he ever going to stop asking that question]
no subject
[The usual, but at least Hinata can still manage a quiet sort-of joke like that.
He makes his way carefully over to join him, sitting beneath that tree and just kind of resting his head back against the trunk to stare at the leaves.]
I've been better. I... wasn't expecting Bols to do that. Even after everything he'd said, I...

[He inclines his head towards Hinata as he sits, shifting slightly for him to have more room]
[His voice becomes more gentle]
You thought he'd give up, as he's kept insisting we vote for him, right? You thought he'd recognize Yamato's innocence and let him live in his place?
no subject
He'll get to that in a second. For now, Hinata takes advantage of that room to make himself a little more comfortable. As comfortable as he can get, sitting on a jungle floor leaning against a tree. There's probably bugs. Ew.]
...Kind of, yeah. I mean, I... I wasn't going to ask him. Like Fuuma did. You know I'd never ask anyone to... to give up their life like that. You can't just... trade lives. One innocent man for another.
But to just shoot him like that, in front of all his friends...
[It had scared him.]

[Community references aside, he feels that rage he's been keeping contained bubbling up as Hinata speaks. Not at him, but that he's here. Exposed to all of this.]
[He takes a deep breath]
[(He wouldn't exactly call either of them innocent men, honestly...)]
He told us himself he was a mass-murderer. I don't know what he expected to achieve by offering himself as a voting option, but.... his reasons were never really altruistic.
I'm sorry you had to see that, Hinata. I know you want to believe in the people here.
no subject
Do... you think what Melborn said was right? That... Bols is really just looking for someone else to kill him?
[This is all so far outside the scope of Hinata's experience. He doesn't really know if this is within Matt's experience, either, but he's older so maybe.
But then he can't help but laugh. It's a quiet, bitter sound as he shakes his head.]
I don't know what to believe in anymore, Matt. I just... want everyone to be able to go home.
no subject
He's more cynical than I'd be about it, but... I think, if he really regretted his actions, he'd be trying to save people. Offering himself up to vote doesn't really accomplish anything. It doesn't absolve him. He won't take responsibility himself.
[Young man, Fisk (of all people) had told him, life is not a fairy tale. Not everyone deserves a happy ending. Matt despises even the thought of agreeing with that monster, this is one thought he can't quite shake.]
I'd like that too, Hinata. [though really, while no one deserves this, Matt's most concerned about the innocents. And he'll be honest] We're losing more people each day.
no subject
[He doesn't want to admit that, but... especially after what happened today, he's not sure what else to think. It scares him, it disgusts him, he just... doesn't really know what to do.
But he does glance over at the mention of them losing more people, nodding once.]
Yeah. It was three people today. And Orion...
[Still just kind of looking at Matt. You okay, protag bro? Do you want to talk about it.]
no subject
[He can't see that nod, gosh!!]
... I'm sorry about earlier today. [The manpaining and all] Honestly, I didn't know Orion that well. But we spoke, the night before he died. He and I felt the same way about certain things. [Protecting the innocent and all] I thought.... [Trust is a strong word, because Matt doesn't particularly trust people he's met a few days ago] I thought he'd help me to get you all home.
no subject
[Just shakes his head again and focuses more intently on Matt. If only he had that weird Kokoronpa skill where he could read thoughts...]
I... see. I... didn't really talk to Orion much before, but... from when I heard him, [because when he didn't like something, he certainly was vocal,] I think we would have gotten along. You don't have anything to apologize for, Matt.
And, um... while I might just be a student, I am a Super High School Level, remember? I want to help get everyone back, too.
no subject
[He does show some emotion, though, for a moment, even with the glasses obscuring his eyes, he seems... exhausted. Weary.]
I can't get wrapped up in my own feelings with so much at stake. So many of you.... ["Are too young for this" would be patronizing, so he refrains] Don't deserve to be here, and don't know how to handle this kind of situation. I've got to do my part, even if there's only so much that can be done.
[Murder, and all.]
[Now, he might have manpained about Orion, but if Hinata were to die, well. Well]
[W e l l]
I know you do, Hinata. And I know I can count on you. I just wish I could say the same about more of the others.
